Diving into the NCP Guidelines, 4th edition
October 31, 2018
The newly revised Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, 4th edition has a wealth of information to help all healthcare professionals and organizations improve the care of people living with a serious illness and their family caregivers.
Below are my suggestions for how to become familiar with the revised guidelines:
Review the Introduction to the 4th edition (pages vii-xi) for an overview of the structure of the guidelines, revisions to each domain, and key concepts and definitions used in the document.
Read one domain to start - pick the one that interests you the most -- to get a sense of the flow and the new elements (domain introduction, Clinical and Operational Implications, Essential Palliative Care Skills, Key Research Evidence, and Practice Examples).
Look-up the highlighted words in the Glossary to see how that word or phrase is used in the guidelines.
Skim the 14 pages of Tools and Resources, organized by domain and click on the links to learn more or download the item.
